TLDR: Buy 3 quarts or XT-M5-QS here https://amzn.to/3kObz0M

1. Finding The Best Fluid

After experiencing noticeably bad shiting habits from my transmission I started down the rabbit hole of finding the best fluid for my RX7 transmission. I ended up in forums, threads on Reddit, and asking fellow rotary enthusiasts about what they use.

The default go-to answer seems to be Redline MT90 or MTL, I think Redline has become the standard because it’s readily accessible, cheap, and you don’t have to visit a dealership to buy it. Having used Redline MTL in the past I know it’s not perfect for some scenarios.

So start my quest of trying to find the best transmission fluid for the Mazda RX7. Naturally, it starts out with a general google search query that leads me to forums that are mostly dead now (A lot of forums have been killed by social media like Facebook and their groups).

Among all the responses, I kept hearing XT-M5-QS come up.

After a few days of research, I was stuck between trying Amsoil MTG, NEO and the Ford Synthetic Transmission Fluid. I ended up purchasing XT-M5-QS because I wanted to hear what all the Miata guys were calling “Unicorn Tears” and see if it was the same for the Mazda RX7 transmission.

2. The Discovery

Below you can find my video about draining the fluid on my FD Mazda RX7 and putting in the new Ford synthetic transmission fluid.

I hope this helped some of you make a decision on a new transmission fluid. I will say if you’re happy with using Redline, Amsoil, or NEO I would say just keep using it, if it works don’t change it! If you’re looking to try a new fluid I’d say try out the Ford option I talked about in this article.

You can buy Ford XT-M5-QS here: https://amzn.to/3kObz0M You’ll want 3 quarts so you can out 2.6 quarts in your RX7 transmission.

Thanks, talk with ya again soon!
